ROI Formula
ROI = (Final Value − Initial Investment) ÷ Initial Investment × 100
Add a time period under More options and this calculator also shows annualized ROI (a CAGR-style figure): ((Final Value ÷ Initial Investment)1/Years − 1) × 100.
What Each Input Means
Initial Investment is what you originally put in.
Final Value is what it’s worth now, or what you got back.
Time Period (years) is optional — add it to see your annualized return.
Worked Example
$1,000 grows to $1,500: ROI = ($1,500 − $1,000) ÷ $1,000 × 100 = 50%. If that took 2 years, annualized ROI works out to about 22.5% per year — total ROI alone doesn’t tell you how fast your money actually grew.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is ROI?
Return on investment: how much you gained or lost, as a percentage of what you originally put in. An ROI of 50% means you got back 1.5 times your initial investment.
What is annualized ROI?
Total ROI doesn't account for how long your money was invested. Annualized ROI (also called CAGR) spreads the return evenly across each year, so you can fairly compare investments held for different lengths of time.
